This production of RAIN, which features music and lyrics by five-time Tony Award nominee Michael John LaChiusa and book by Sybille Pearson, is a new twist on the classic short story by Somerset Maugham. It is set in 1924 at a boarding hotel on the very rainy island of Western Samoa, and tells the story of prostitute “Sadie Thompson” and the Pentecostal missionary who tries to save her.
Eden Espinosa, best known for playing “Elphaba” in Wicked on Broadway, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, stars as “Sadie Thompson.” The show also features Broadway veterans Jared Zirilli, Marie-France Arcilla, Tony nominee Elizabeth A. Davis, Jeremy Davis, Betsy Morgan, Rusty Ross, Mike Sears and Tally Sessions.
RAIN is Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein’s first musical, and the 30th to get its start at the Globe. Many Globe-bred musicals including The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and 2014 Tony Award winner A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder have gone on to have successful runs on Broadway. Bright Star and Allegiance also got their starts there, and are currently playing on Broadway.
